My gas heater has gone out again and needs to be replaced.  How many BTU's do I need?  Small pool, 10,000 gallons with small hot tub.

Dear Kathy:
Thank you for writing. It is all up to you. If you are not the type who likes to wait for the spa to heat up then we go as big as possible. If we are talking heat pumps use ones over 100,000 BTU's. An 80,000 BTU heat pump can heat your pool well with a blanket on it in the cold weather. If we are talking about gas heaters, (I hope not as they are so expensive to run) then you can go to 400,000 BTU's. It all depends on what gas heater is there now and if they ran a big enough gas pipe to supply it with gas. Did you want to switch to a heat pump or stay with gas? Most gas heaters fail when the pool chemicals eat through the heat exchanger. Is that what happened to yours? Heat Pumps made out of titanium can't ever be hurt by chemicals and most have a lifetime warranty too. Please let me know which direction you are going in and I will try to help out.

Sincerely,
